District of Columbia

The District of Columbia is a unique jurisdiction, within the Mid-atlantic region as well as the nation. For purposes of education, it is both a State Education Agency (SEA) and an Local Education Agency (LEA). It is at the same time a city unto itself with its own municipal government and seat of the federal government. It is an entirely urban area -- by far the most densely populated "state" in the union. It has about 65,000 students and 167 schools.
