Resources for the Accommodation of English Language Learners (ELLs) in State Content Achievement Assessments

This Web page features 2 resources for SEAs; a warm-up activity, and a powerpoint presentation on ELL accommodations that can be used when training district testing coordinators about your state's content-area assessment policy for ELLs.

Resource 1: Training Activity on ELL Accommodations

A 1/2 hour warm-up activity, How do accommodations for ELLs help ELLs access the language of the test while still maintaining test validity? [PDF]

This activity is useful when explaining to district and school educators how accommodations for English language learners (ELLs) are different from accommodations offered to students with disabilities. ELL accommodations are designed to help ELLs access the language of the test (while still maintaining the validity of the test).

This training activity involves a mathematics problem that has been written in Hungarian. After printing it out, sit with a partner to find the answer to the mathematics problem using different types of accommodations. Post-activity discussion questions are included.

Resource 2: Power Point Slides for SEA trainings on Accommodations for English Language Learners
[PPT]

These slides and notes (found in the notes area of each slide) are created for SEAs to use when rolling out their content area assessment poilcies for English language learners (ELLs).
