Maryland is home to one-fifth of the Mid-Atlantic Region's school enrollment and falls in the middle of the region's five states: larger than DC and Delaware, but smaller than New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Maryland's districts correspond to each of the state's counties, with the exception of Baltimore City and Edison Schools. It has 24 school districts, serving an ethnically diverse student population, with minority students approaching a majority.

MACC Project Highlight
MACC supported the Middle School Steering Committee’s research and development for this report during years 2 and 3. During year 4, MACC is helping MSDE explore ways in which it can support the implementation of the recommendations in the Critical Middle report. MACC is:
• providing sample strategies for implementation that identify actions that can be taken at the state, district, school and classroom level based on the scope of each recommendation;
• developing sample indicators to demonstrate what successful implementation would look like at each level; and
• drafting a communication plan for ongoing dissemination of support information to stakeholders in the field (i.e. website, list serve, meetings, etc.).
