Pennsylvania, the sixth largest state in the union, has the largest number (1,821,146) and proportion (43 percent) of public school students in the Mid-Atlantic Region. It has 501 school districts and 2,446 schools.
Pennsylvania's largest urban districts are Philadelphia, with about 190,000 students, Pittsburgh, with nearly 35,000, and Central Bucks County District, with close to 20,000 students.
Within the region, Pennsylvania hosts well over half of the students enrolled in rural schools. Nineteen percent of Pennsylvania's students -- over 350,000 -- are enrolled in such schools. The state's smallest/rural districts include the Austin Area (with 253 students), Midland Borough (with 356 students), Salisbury-Elk Lick (375 students) and Turkeyfoot Valley Area (395 students).
