District of Columbia Projects Year 3
2007-2008
Support for the District of Columbia State Support Leadership Team
The District of Columbia’s State Committee (SC) members include representation from the State Education Agency (SEA), all DC Local Education Agencies, including charter schools, and MACC staff. The SC was charged with the development of a state system of support for underperforming schools that:
1. addresses the structure and organization of the SEA,
2. identifies priority needs for districts and schools and strategies to address those needs, and
3. determines the implementation of support activities.
MACC’s work in Year 3 focused on assisting the SC to meet its objective to build the Committee’s collective knowledge and skill to develop and implement a differentiated approach to state Technical Assistance/Professional Development for schools and districts in different stages of improvement. MACC provided information and resources on research/best practices to inform the SEA in the coordination and/or development of a state system of support planning in order to address the designation of the “At Risk” status of the District.
Support to the District of Columbia Statewide System of Support and School Improvement Committee
During Year 2 the DC SC focused on the development of a state system of intensive and sustained support for underperforming schools. In Year 3, MACC staff consulted with State Committee team members to determine SEA technical assistance needs based on the new responsibilities of SC members resulting from the separation of the DC LEA/SEA. MACC staff also assisted the DC system of state support as they inventoried existing data to determine if it was sufficient to determine root causes of low performance in schools identified for improvement.
